Setting Intention: Thinking your magick through

Weaving Magic Intent Feature

Setting intention is more than motive and outcomes. Your best magick results from thinking through all possibilities. Intent is awareness crafted with the answers to who, what, where, why, and how.

Merriam-Webster defines intent as:

Intent–1: a usually clearly formulated or planned intention: AIM
2a: the act or fact of intending: PURPOSE
b: the state of mind with which an act is done: VOLITION
(https://www.merriam-webster.com/ accessed 7-2021)

Intent aims your purpose, though will. We’ve heard the phrase ‘Well it didn’t turn out right, but they had a good intent.’ To have good intent and flawed outcomes is not optimal.

How do you ensure that what you mean to happen is what happens?

  • First, identify what is truthfully motivating you.
  • Your second step is to answer what is it you specifically want to change?
  • Next, assess how your magick will impact others?

Intention Motive

Only you can identify your magickal motivation. An example of a flawed reason would be ‘I just want to have it.’ At the beginning, there needs to be love, passion and compassion behind your motivation.

Crafting with the powers of the cosmos for magickal outcomes is not like a letter to Santa Claus. The cosmos is not an ATM set up for our personal instant gratification.

Some witches, magicians, and wizards, especially new ones coming from a monotheistic belief system, have a ‘name it and claim it’ motivation. They feel entitled to say it is theirs and it must be theirs.

That is disrespectful and rude to the cosmic energies! If you think that highly of yourself, you will trip over your own feet and land on your face. It’s called karma.

Intention Setting for Change

Magick is used to change. Recognize where you are and why you are there. Gaze back and identify the steps that got you where you are. Now, identify where you want to go.

Change is motion. Knowing where your path has come from allows you to be aware of your current direction. How significant is the change of direction to get you where you want to be? The greater the change requires more forecasting and energy.

The power to weave setting intent into incremental steps comes from identifying where you are and where you want to be. Weaving each step will move you toward your end goal.

Life energies are dynamic and constantly changing. Foreseeing your magick’s end helps you to make wise adjustments. React to change as you strive for your magickal goals within the realities of life.

I strive to do very little ‘big’ magick. I avoid setting intention which do too much too quick. Preferring instead to weave my magick, and visualize the path of where I am to where I want to be.

For example, with Hermits’ Cupboard, I identified the difference between where we were and where we are with products we offer. I identified the general direction the store was going, made adjustments, and planned where we wanted to be. I identified the steps needed to take to reach those outcomes.

As I work magick to make minor changes, the business dynamic will change. If I ignore these changes, I may miss opportunities that were not there before. If we were to grow all at once, we would scramble to keep up with all the effects generated from the change.

Life has enough challenges that we don’t cause. Why would we want to make things more difficult by self-inflicted obstacles?

The surrounding energies are dynamic and constantly changing. Foreseeing your magick’s end helps you to make wise adjustments. Reacting to change as you attain your magickal goals within the realities of life.

In my personal magickal practice, I strive to do very little ‘big’ magick. I avoid setting intention that try to do too much too quick. Preferring instead to weave my magick, and visualize the path of where I am to where I want to be.

For example, with Hermits’ Cupboard, I identified the difference between where we were and where we are with products and services we offer. I identified the general direction the store was going, made adjustments, and planned where we wanted to be. I identified the steps I needed to take to reach the intended outcomes.

As I work magick to make minor changes, the business dynamic will change. If I ignore these changes and plow my way through, I may miss opportunities that were not there before. If we were to ‘big bang’ and grow all at once we would scramble to keep up with all the changes that are generated from change.

Life has enough of its own complications and challenges that we don’t cause. Why would we want to make things more difficult by self-inflicted obstacles?

Accounting for Your own Choices

Why there is a difference between where you are today and where you want to be? You must accept, you played a part in getting to where you are. What are your actions, behaviors, or choices contributed to where you are?

You must be honest with yourself in this process. You dug a hole over time and now you want instantly out of the hole? We find the answers we seek in magick within ourselves.

An example intent is earning more money. You never seem to have enough money. Your financial situation is where it is, because of what? For this example, it is because of bad credit. What caused the bad credit?

In this example, the magical intent should not be earning more money. The magick intent should correct the faults that created the bad credit. You can earn more money but your credit’s going to get worse and that is a constant spiral. By focusing on cause, we have a greater effect on affect. Your magick requires focus to correct the bad credit, then you will have more money.

The energies you are putting into the problem are your responsibility. All variables that are out of your control and influence need to be identified. Effect is not always the root cause. The goal is to get to a root cause.

These steps are going to change your perspective of how you approach your magick intent. I think the first thing that we should do in magic is look inward for the cause and solution before we reach outward for a solution.

Your Magick’s Impact

Before you start, use clear vision to see your magick all the way through. Map the path you want to take and be aware of cause and effect along the path. Your intention needs to be flexible so you can adjust to changes. What will the impact of your will have on the intention? Plan deliberately to have minimal disruptions to others.

I approach weaving magic plainly. Seeing where I’m at and where I want to be. Then I plan magickal steps to get to where I’m going. Those steps might not be an exact straight line all the way through. The energies are rarely the same all the way through the path. I have to be ready to see what is coming and adapt.

An arrogant mind set of ‘that’s the direction I’m going and if you get in my way, I’ll run your ass over’ leaves a wake of disruption. When you act out in a power drive, you’re going to be disrupting the energies and lives of everyone along that path. Careful, karma is a bitch and you are going to get bit.

Magick at the expense of others is not what you want to achieve. Visualize who you are impacting. Is it your intent to affect those individuals? Your actions may cause an equal and opposite reaction that may affect these people.

Outcomes should be positive and their energies should align to help propel you forward. Do not choose to be selfish and pay no respect to the energies and disruptions of others. You need to be ready to own outcomes.

A Time for Bold Impact

There are times you may need to steam roller your way through. I would still advise using caution because the recoil of energies can be hell.

An example, if you are in an abusive situation, you may not have an option to leave easily. In those cases, plan your steps with safekeeping. If you’re going to jump–do it into a domestic violence shelter, or a protective environment. Friends of the abuser will not be a safe place.

When you need immediate magick out of abuse, try to see through the midst of the smoke and mirrors of distortion and manipulation, place yourself where you know you will be truly safe. You are your best advocate; be bold, take action and take care of yourself.

Crappy people show up in our lives and jack up all kinds of things. Every so often crazy people need a bold magickal response. If your motivation is your own mental and emotional health, then take care of yourself first. Every action you make will have an equal reaction that you will need to deflect or brace for impact.

Magick Timeline

This is short and sweet. Magick should have time lines, but they need to be adaptive if necessary. A lunar month is not 28 days but 27.32 days. A year is not 365 rotations of the Earth but 365.25 rotations. Your magick should have a time limit, but be ready to adapt.

Space for Natural Manifestation

You can foretell what the natural outcomes might be. Use visual meditation to get a sense of how things may naturally work out.

The cosmos has worked out in similar situations. Reading mythology and folklore you can discover ancient patterns. Stories of deity, culture, and heroes are full of relevant common experiences.

The experiences of your ancestors’ and friends may also enlighten you to how similar situations played out. The universe, in its chaos, is pretty consistent. Chances are the energies will play out or work the same way again.

You should weave your magick into the fabric of your life. Your way through the timeline needs to be clear. Your magick should focus on intending to manifest one simple change.

The energies will change in time. Wait and watch how they change. Changes, ever so slight, may be required. The change we need to make is sometimes within ourselves.

Like the sacred tree, we need to move and adapt as we’re working towards this goal. It doesn’t make it harder; it actually makes it easier in the long run because instead of us battling through we’re able to weave our way through.

Another example, if you’re in a sailboat and you want to get from point A to B and the wind is in front of you, you must adapt how you set your sails to move in the right direction against the wind.

Choosing not to adapt will cause you frustration because while you’re trying to go forward you’ve got a headwind that’s constantly pushing you backwards. That’s what happens when you try to force that intent and make it as focused as a laser beam.

Adding Your Energies to Intention

What is your intended outcome? Are you ready to take responsibility for the effects of that outcome? You hold the answers within yourself to confirm you’re not the one hindering your own magic. Can see the path vividly using visualization meditation? These steps should be intense and challenging.

Intent, done correctly, adds your energies to the magick outcomes. The time you spend analyzing and planning adds your energy. Envisioning inward and outward are energies added to intent. Your planning energies will accumulate, manifesting successful magick.

Summary

Setting intention requires insight, foresight, and planning. You need to have compassion and take personal responsibility. A responsible witch is going to take their time to decide and discern how this affects them, how it impacts others, and how it affects the surrounding energies.

Plan your magick by using incremental steps. It’s important to meditate, look towards deity, your ancestors, the stories of your mythology. These stories will reveal how the cosmos worked in these situations before. Chances are, it will work the same way yet again.

I hope you find these steps and ideas helpful. The right path for you is up to you to choose.
